For those of us that have been travelling for quite some time Uber is one of the best things to happen in the travel world for years. Hailing a cab or taking a taxi in some cities around the world can be a harrowing, expensive and unpleasant experience (and let’s not get started on how bad Melbourne taxi drivers are).
So what is Uber?
Currently in 53 countries around the world, I like to think of it as a cross between a taxi and private driver with rates much lower than you’d pay with either of those options. You also have the option of choosing the type of Uber you want to book; For example currently in Melbourne there is Uber X (Camry, Falcon, Commodore) or Uber Black (Caprice, Chrysler, BMW).
Uber uses your phone’s GPS to detect your location and connects you with the nearest available driver. Get picked up anywhere — even if you don’t know the exact address.
When you request a ride, they’ll find a driver and let you track it on the map. You’ll also get a text when the driver approaches. The driver’s name and call details are in the app and you can call or message anytime you need to.
View rates for your city in the app. You can also enter your pickup and drop-off locations to get a fare quote for your trip.
You don’t need cash when you ride with Uber. Once you arrive at your destination, your fare is automatically charged to your credit card or PayPal on file – no need to tip. They’ll also e-mail you a receipt.
Drivers not only meet Uber’s standards, they meet your standards. After your trip, you can rate your experience and leave additional feedback about your driver.
Simplify your life and your fractions. Invite your friends to split the fare. If your friends opt in, each person’s credit card will be charged equally. No more pay-me-backs or IOUs.
I’ve used Uber in a few cities around the world and found the experience fantastic. The driver’s know the best routes (or you can tell them which way you’d like to go), it is cheaper and cleaner than cabs and you can see what the fare will be straight away (you can also choose to tip or not tip). The driver’s pride themselves in the rating system so it’s important to rate afterwards.
I’m also really happy that there are more Uber driver’s coming on board around Melbourne. Previously taxi’s were the only option in the area’s I frequent often and the Uber Driver’s I’ve used in the last couple of months are all fantastic.
