A question I get asked quite frequently by not only clients but family and friends is what is my favourite airline to fly.
A bit of a tough one to answer as there are so many questions to ask after it. In Economy? Business? For Meals? For Luggage allowance? For seat comfort? For aircraft type? Price? Long haul or short haul?
I have flown many different airlines around the world, but in hindsight probably only a very small amount compared to many other travellers that I know. It took me a while to try and think of them (I’m sure there’s a few I’ve forgotten) but the list stands at the moment with the following
VIRGIN AUSTRALIA (PREVIOUSLY VIRGIN BLUE)
REX (REGIONAL EXPRESS)
QANTAS AND QANTASLINK
AIR NEW ZEALAND
AIR ASIA X
As you can see it is quite a varied list from Australia and Oceania, Asia, US and Canada, Middle East and Europe.
Surprisingly when reading through it I realised I hadn’t flown with Emirates, which is quite strange considering how popular they are in this part of the world and cover so many destinations. My reason is pretty simple. With my frequent flyer status I don’t want to accumulate points or status credits with them (as I rarely fly Qantas and they are code-share partners). Whereas Etihad have similar preferred routes as Emirates does so I stick with them for Velocity status (Virgin Australia).
Back to the question at hand. If I have to think about the overall combination of everything I think of when I hear the word “favourite airline” then my answer would probably be Etihad. I love the soft product, the crews are always fantastic, lounges are brilliant, generous luggage allowance, always on time (on every flight I’ve taken), food is excellent…it’s just tick after tick. I have flown with Etihad in both Economy and Business and have found all my flights with them have been enjoyable.
My least favourite? Well that’s easy. United. Imagine being crammed in the middle seat squashed between two strangers for 13 hours in the world’s most uncomfortable economy seat and being served what was worse than school camp slop. With cranky rude Flight Attendant’s who so obviously didn’t want to be on the flight anymore than I did, then you have the answer. United depresses me even when browsing through their website. I have avoided them for many years now.
What’s your favourite airline?
