US Airways Dividend Miles promo….AGAIN!

Now through January 2, 2015, you’ll earn up to 45,000 bonus Dividend Miles® when you buy miles for yourself, or add up to 45,000 bonus miles to your purchase when you gift miles to a friend or loved

You can also share miles between friends, family or colleagues to help them get to their next destination. Plus until December 30, 2014, you’ll save 30% on the transfer cost.

With the merger of the program with American Airlines buying miles is a great way to get that premium award quicker, however as with any program finding award space (and dealing with the USDSM call centre) is becoming more difficult. I have spent literally hours on the phone with their agents trying to find award availability and check for routings.

By doing a search for buying 80,000 miles plus the 45k bonus, comes to roughly $2320 including taxes and fees. That’s 1.855 US cents per mile which isn’t the lowest it’s been, but still not bad value if you’re just starting out or need to add to your mile stock pile.

From the east coast of Australia to Europe return is 120,000 miles in Business class (or 150,000 miles in First) plus taxes and booking fees so it is still excellent value considering that return business fares can be anywhere up to $9000!

I have previously travelled with Singapore Airlines, Thai, Lufthansa and Aegean all in Business as part of using USDM, and have travel coming up with Cathay and Qantas using the same methods. It was difficult to find award availability from Australia, and previously I have found it easier to pick up the routing in Asia (90,000 miles return from Singapore to Europe or 80,000 miles return from Hong Kong to Europe).

US Airways is now part of the oneworld network (previously they were with Star Alliance) so you can book flights (subject to availability) with British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Qatar, American Airlines, Finnair and Malaysia among others.
