Hotel Review: Marriott Melbourne

I have never been a huge fan of Marriott properties. Perhaps because I feel they offer so many varied types of accommodation and there is not that “standard” that I see in other hotel chains. Everything from their service, room rates, to the room quality is so different…and I honestly think some of the actual Marriott’s themselves should be rated about 3 stars.

For example….The room quality varies very different from the 3 Marriott’s I have stayed in: Surfers Paradise, Sydney Harbour and Melbourne.

The Melbourne Marriott is situated in an excellent location in town…an easy walk to all the parts of the city you would want to visit, as well as 2 min walk to the fantastic Greek restaurants on Lonsdale streets.

To start with, the parking situation is NOT designed for anyone with a car bigger than a tiny hatch. The very small roller door on the side of the hotel which leads into the world’s tiniest car park needs to be driven with care!

The lobby area is small but well maintained. Staff were polite without being too overly friendly.

Our package was in a King room, Parking, Breakfast, Canapes at the bar and late check out.

The room which had been recently renovated was TINY by Australian hotel standards…just enough room for the bed, a small ottoman, and room for luggage. Very small but clean bathroom.
The bed was quite hard, and no choice of pillows or turn down service, but loved the colour scheme in the room which was very soothing and peaceful.

The bar area of which we had our canapes (a plate with some olives, cheese and capsicum!) was dimly lit with the staff trying to avoid being anywhere but there! We couldn’t wait to get out of there fast enough and go for a walk instead!

The rooms were quiet, however I just didn’t feel that luxury that i was hoping to feel by staying here. The prices are very expensive as opposed to other 5 star hotels in this city and would expect more bang for our buck!

Breakfast the next morning was fantastic…looking out the windows on ground level had a nice feel, and plenty of choices available. A really good quality breakfast and very popular.

As one of the most popular hotel chains in the world, this property needs to offer more for the prices they are charging, and would be interested to see what the suites are like to gain a comparison.

Rating: 3 Room too small, service just OK
