Hotel Review: Sofitel Melbourne

Spur of the moment overnight stay with hubby.

Booked online with Advantage Plus and paid for the upgrade to the Club.

Check in:
Drove up the driveway and was immediately greeted by a porter who organised a very swift procedure with Hubby and the car. I did ask him if I was to check in at Club Level and he said no..which i found out later was not true. I could have checked in at club level.

The smell of the hotel is a lovely fragrance. Not too overpowering, just enough for a “That’s a nice smell!”
The lady at reception was friendly, quick and did her job well. I asked for an upgrade and was given one to the a corner room. Was also able to check in at 11am. Not sure if that is a given thing when being a member of Advantage Plus, but certainly great service. Helped myself to a lovely green apple on the desk!

Elevators do make your ears pop. We were on the 38th floor and none of the rooms are too close to the lifts which is great. A lovely atrium circling the floors and almost a semi circle later we were at our room.

The room is itself is a decent size. It was a Luxury Room…2 above the normal standard. The first thing we said was “WOW, the view”. With very good reason. The view from our room was simply stunning during the day and even better at night. As far I’m concerned, even better than Crown Towers. The windows are ceiling to floor in various panels (not a whole window across) and gives the room character. There are blinds as well as block out wooden panels that you shut, so it is completely dark at night if you prefer that.

The bed was divine. There is a reason they sell so many of these beds. Perfect. Pillow Menu, crisp sheets, lots of pillows…and that view!
There is a Large LCD TV that swings directly in front of the bed, Bose Speakers and Surround Sound, a DVD Player, CD Player and a player to upload your images from your camera to the TV for viewing.
The lighting and TV system is all one touch screen box. You can choose various lighting settings including “Mood”, “Floor”, “All on” and then selected ones…nice touch.
Strangely there are 3 phones. One on the desk, one beside the bed and one in the bathroom. Not used to seeing so many phones around as all of us tend to use mobiles these days.
2 Ottoman Chairs, a coffee table, and marble wall unit complete the room..as well as a short hallway which had a ledge, the mini bar inside the fridge, and the mini bar above the fridge with Espresso Machine and other items to purchase.

Inside the wardrobe was a safe, slippers, umbrella, bathrobes, pillow menu, iron, ironing board, coat hangers and luggage stand.
The bathroom was lovely, with a small mood light turning on each time you entered. Thought the toilet was too squashed between the basis and bath though.
Nice towels, excellent magnifying mirror and Roger and Gallet amenities which were Soap, Bath Gel, Body Lotion, Shampoo, Conditioner, Comb.
They left a note which said you could buy the small bottle of mouth wash which they had left there. Poor taste..should have been included.

Had access to the Club on the 35th floor. Friendly guy and girl on the first day. Stunning panoramic view again, log fire, a few TVS, tables and couches. Also a meeting room, 2 computers and printers, DVD Library and CDs to borrow, a chill out room with Wii, Bathroom and Shower and a sleeping room.
Food and drinks were good quality and heaps of it! Had afternoon tea, which were scones, savouries, cakes. Dinner canapes were oysters, dips, canapes, quiche and lots more. Breakfast in the morning was fruits and cereals, some hot food and a menu with made to order items. Great presentation and quality.
Staff are hard to find..always seem to be talking to friends and not there when you need them…especially the lady on the 2nd day.

Organised 2 in room massages which was a fantastic service. Concierge made the booking quickly for me as they have a menu in the rooms. Masseur arrived on time, was set up within 2 mins..and was polite and knowledgeable about the hotel and its facilities.

Ordered room service at midnight. About 40 min wait for a milkshake and sticky date pudding which was a little long, but still great food.
Called up reception and asked for some tweezers and was brought to me in 5 mins.

All the staff bar the lady at the club, were friendly and happy. Every time i walked past someone they greeted me hello and it was so quite and peaceful in the whole building.

Was about to get a late check out till 12 which was appreciated. Was not disturbed by room service. Express check out form was left under the door as well as a newspaper in the morning.

The location is a 10min stroll to the Bourke Street Mall (downwards.) Going back up with loads of shopping didn’t appeal to us, so we took the tram which took around 3 mins to get back to the top at the end of the day.
The hotel has a variety of shops at its doorstop as well as the leading brands leading down the street. All High End Fashion and Jewellery in lovely buildings with classic charm.

There are 2 7 Eleven stores within a 2 min walk of the hotel, a Day Spa in the same complex, Post Office and other eateries. The hotel has 2 very good restaurants but we didn’t eat there.

I would highly recommend the Club benefits for anyone who wants to chill out and look at the view all day. You don’t even need to venture out of the hotel with the inclusions you get. This is not a cheap hotel to stay at, even after using the AP Program, but i would highly recommend as a great night out.

Rating: 5 Great hotel!
